Smurf animation through the years
Les Aventures
des Schtroumpfs
The first smurf
animation was a little-known film called "Les Aventures des Schtroumpfs"
which was made in 1965, this was in black & white.
The Smurfs
and the Magic Flute
Eleven years later,
in 1976, "La Flute à six schtroumpfs" was released,
this was based on the original "Johan and Peewit" story.
In 1983, an English version of this smurf movie was released called
"The Smurfs and the Magic Flute". Names of characters such
as Johan and Peewit were different in the English language version,
Johan became John and Peewit was called William. The film being just
a dubbed version of the earlier Belgian feature, the names were probably
lost in the translation.
The Hanna-Barbera
Smurf Cartoon Series
Bill Hanna and
Joseph Barbera (pronounced Bar-bare-uh) created original cartoons
and brought them to prime-time TV for the very first time. Hanna-Barbera
ruled animation for decades, having runaway successes with The
Flintstones, Scooby
Doo, Josie
and the Pussycats and Top
Cat, to name but a few.
In the early 1980s,
Hanna-Barbera produced a traditional animated cartoon series based
on "The Smurfs". After seeing his daughter happily playing
with a smurf doll, Fred Silverman, then president of NBC, bought the
rights to the cartoon series. Airing for the first time on NBC on
12 September 1981, the smurf cartoon series dominated Saturday mornings
for nearly a decade, it became an international hit and the cartoon
shows are still being broadcast in many areas of the world today.
